Notes
He was murdered by his son Gay, after an argument about Gay going hunting, when his father wanted him to stay home to help with some work. Upon Gay returning home, while his father was eating his supper, they argued, and Gay picked up a knife, his father, in response also pick up his knief. Gay went and picked up a rifle and shot his father three times. Being mortally wounded, Sumner had enough time to write his last will and testament, having signed it in his own blood. His wife was away visiting their daughter at the time of the shooting, only having returned later that same day, and learned of the shooting upon her return to Novi. Gay went to Ionia Prison for the murder of his father, only to escape a few years later. After his escape, Gay kept in touch with some of the local people, sending letters from the Klondike. The last letter was received in 1899, it was assumed that he may have died, but nothing is really known.
