2040 S. Livernois Rd. Rochester Hills (aka Avon Twp.)
The first owner of this property, was James Brown, he purchased from the U.S. Government the E 1/2 NE 1/4 of section 28 in Avon Township, for a total of 80 acres, on Jul 5, 1823. It is most likely that James Brown never settled on this land, for he sold it on Apr 22, 1824 to Benjamin Horton, and in turn Benjamin Horton sold the land to William S. Adams in 1826. William Adams was the one who build the main section of the house, by the construction , that I had seen, of this house, it would be placed in the late 1830's. I can remember that to the north of the house, there were a couple of stone out buildings, that were taken down about 2000.
A couple of months before William Adams died in 1878, his wife Harriet C. Haskins having died in 1856, willed the property to his sons John Q. and Solon Adams. By 1880 John Q., Franklin S., and Caroline Adams, all siblings, were living in the house. The 1896 land ownership of Oakland County, shows that John Q. still owned the property, but by the 1900 census, John and two of his sisters are living in Pontiac Township. The 1908 land ownership Map, shows that a William Arft owned the property., by 1930 a Mr. Davis was the owner. By 1940, M. Davis still owned the land where the house was, however the area to the west and south had been split off into smaller lots.

The image above if from the 1980 aerial view of the property. On the center of the image is the house and garage, to the north and left are the out buildings that were built of rocks. My wife was told by her fater, who live in the area from 1940-2008, that the longer of the two building was the orginal house that William Adams built and lived in until he could build the frame structure. The barn which is the large building located in the bottom right of the image, had two other building next to it. The two buildings on the south side of the barn were taken down in the mid 1980's.

The 2002 aerial view shows that the barn is still standing, however it looks like it is in very bad shape, by 2005 the barn is gone and only the foundation is left. In 2010 the traffic circle that is now at the intersection of Livernois and Hamlin roads, was being constructed. I was told by the person that owned the home in 2009 , that the traffic circle was going to be about ten feet from the corner of the garage, a smaller one was built, so that it would not affect the house and garage.

This is a birdseye view of the house, taken from Google Earth, as the one below taken from Google streetview, both are about from 2016. In the fall of 2021, clean up started on the property, with the removal of trees, exposing the old barn foundation, which had not been seen in almost 30 years. In the first week of March 2022, the house that had stood for probably more than 170 years was taken down, to make way for what appears to be another housing project.
