Martin, Joseph

Joseph Martin, a farmer living fives miles north of Holly, near Belford station, was found dead in a barn on the Sandford farm, ner Belford, Thursday afternoon of last week. He had a field of wheat on the Sandford farm, and had gone over there to harvest it. Some men working with him left him about 3 o'clock and went fishing. When they last saw him alive he was sitting in the barn door, and when they returned, about 5 o'clock, found him lying on the ground near the door, dead. They at once spread the alarm, and telephoned to Holly for Justice Chauncey Stuart and Undertaker J. W. McKinne, ho immediately left for the scene of the death. Mr Stuart ordered the body moved to the home of the deceased, and Friday impaneled a coroners jury and an inquest was held. At first, the jry thought they would ask for a post mortem, and after hearing the testimony of the few witnesses, they retired for a decision. For two hours they deliberated and finally decided they could never reach a decision unless a post mortem examination was held. Dr. Slaugh of Grand Blanc was telephoned for, and he opened the head of the unfortunate man. He found that death was caused by apoplexy. The jury rendered their verdict in accordance with the evidence. The circumstances surrounding Mr. Martin's death are peculiarly sad. His wife, who is very young, had died but one week before, and two little children are left fatherless and motherless. So Sudden a breaking up of a happy family, is a shock to the whole community. Martin was 44 years old, and besides the children leaves one brother. The funeral was held at the South Grand Blanc church, Sunday forenoon. Rev W. G. Clark of Holly Officiating. The remains were laid to rest in the Lakeside Cemetery.
