Rainey, Jennie

Suicide of a YOung Woman at Royal Oak. Mar 14 - Miss Jennie Rainey, aged about 18, and a daughter of Alexander Rainey, a farmer living about three-quarters of a mile north of the village, drank carbolic acid Saturday afternoon, and died shortly after. Miss Rainey had for some time been employed at the Michigan Military Academy. She came home Sunday to spend time with her father and sisters. Shortly after entering the house, she complained to her sister Maggie of being tired, sid that she had a sick headache and went upstairs to take a nap, as she said. A bottle of carbolic acid stood upon a shelf in the bedroom and Miss Rainey taking it down, swallowed about three quarters of an ounce of the contents. The fact as not discovered by the family until 45 minutes later. Dr. Hatt was immediately summoned, but the unfortunate, young woman was past medical aid and died shortly afterwards. Coroner Wm Helzinger was called, but decided that an inquest was unnecessary. No motive for the act is known, but it is said that Miss Rainey has of late been a little out of her heads at times and it is supposed she took poison while in this condition.
