Harger, K. D.

K. D. Harger was born in West Bloomfield Township, Oakland County, Dec. 8, 1856, the son of Joel P. and Harriet J. Harger, and died at his home in Riverside, California, Jan 1, 1922. His earlier education was obtained in the district school, which was supplemented by four years course in the Pontiac High School, from which he graduated in 1877. For a time he worked in the office of his brother, james h. Harger, who was the Register of Deeds for Oakland County. Then he entered the literary department of the University of Michigan from which he graduated in 1884. He taught several years in the high shcools at McKinley, Alabama; Burlington, Iowa; and Elgin, Illinois, after which he studied law in chicago, where he practiced a few years when he went to California. He settled at Riverside in 1904, where in connection with his business he became interested as a part owner in an Abstract Company. While he never unduly pressed himself forward for public favor or position, he nevertheless was appointed by President Wilson postmaster at Riverside, the duties of which office he discharged with such qualities of integrity, mental poise and obliging courtesy that the California press speaks of him as having been a model citizen, faithful to duty, honorable, obliging, and having left a legion of friends who held him in high regard. July 17, 1889 he married Maira McDonald, at Rochester, Michigan, who also was a graduate of the Pontiac High School, in the class of 1878, and of the University of Michigan, in the class of 1887. The married life of Mr. and Mrs. Harger was singularly happy and beautiful. They were affectionate and devoted to each other, and they had a delightful gift of begetting kindness and happiness in those with whom they came in contact. They were both sincere believers in the truths of the Christian religion and active workers in the Congregational Church. Mr. Harger was also a member of the Knights of Pythias and of the Masonic Fraternity. Mr Harger is survived by his wife and two sons, Donald K. and Burt, the older of whom is a student in Leland Stanford University, and the younger i the Polytechnic High School at Riverside; also surviving are a brother, Autran C. Harger, of Royal Oak; a sister, Mrs. Augustus G. Newman of Pontiac, and several cousins in Oakland County.
