1. John Axford, came in 1730, originally from Oxford, England, but lived for a whial near Trenton before he settled, in 1735, in Oxford, Warren County, New Jersey, wit his wife, Anna Beach. He belonged to the Society of Friends, and at their death were interred in the Friends Burying Ground in the Quaker Settlement on this County.John Axford settled in what is now the south part of Oxford Twp., near the Piquette Iron Works.He had the following children:

3) Samuel Axford (John) married Sarah. He lived in Oxford, Warren County, New Jersey, where the stone house stands on Furnace brook, at the junction of Furnace abd Butzville roads. His will was made Mar 12m 1805, probated on Dec 23, 1811.He is probably the Samuel Axford who served as a Second Lieut. in Capt. John Polhemus' 4th Co., FirstBattalion f the Continental Troops of the "Jersey Line." Served from Nov 10 1775 to Nov 5, 1776, when ordered from Ticonderoga to N. He walked the entire distance from New Jersey to the new territory. Samuel Axford the father of John, came to Addison Township, Oakland County, Michigan from Macomb County in 1836, entering land from the government Jul 5, 1834 in Addison Twp., moved there in 1836 next to an Indian who like the white mans way of living and had taken up land from the government and was ffarming the same as the shite people. His name was Now-ma-to-gut-to. John Axford thought a great deal of this Indian and his wife, so they named their first child after Ka-di-ja, the Indian wife. John Axford, with his brother William, were early settlers at Clarkston. In 1838 they built a shanty, put in a sock of goods, and kept the first store in the town. They soon built a frame house, which they used as a storeroom.They had the following children:
