An Attempted Burglary At Royal Oak

The burglar's gun failed to shoot or attorney Wilcox would have been a dead man. The burglar is now in jail awaiting trial. Sunday night, Frank Temple rode to the residence of attorney Alfred F. Wilcox at Royal Oak, left his bicycle at the side of the building, quietly removed his shoes and entered through a cellar window. He secured, it is alleged, a quantity of silverware and went up stairs. He gained entrance to the room of Cicero Millington, Mr. Wilcox's father-in-law. "if you move. I'll blow your brain out!" Cicero Millington woke up with the start of hearing those words. Over his bed stood a man pointing a revolver in his face. "Now, if you have any coin, tell me where it is, and don't make a fuss." Mr Millington is an aged man, but has lost none of his nerve. He began calling for help, at the same time jumping up and grappling with the intruder. Mr. Wilcox heard the cries in the room above . He called to Mr. Millington that help was coming. The burglar, hearing the voices below, threw the old man into a corner and began snapping his revolver. The gun missed fire, and with a bound the fellow started down stairs and out through the front door, which ha had evidently unlocked in planning an escape beforehand. Mr. Wilcox reached the hallway just as the burglar placed his hand upon the door. The stranger turned deliberately and snapped his revolver in Mr. Wilcox's face several times, every cartridge missing fire. The revolver in Mr. Wilcox's hand spoke out three times, as the burglar ran down the steps and into the road followed by Mr. Wilcox. Just as the fellow leaped the fence, a fourth shot was left in Mr. Wilcox's revolver, and a yell of pain told his pursuer that the shot had taken effect. Mr. Wilcox watched the fellow disappear into the darkness, and returned to the house to dress himself. In a short time the neighborhood was aroused and Deputy Sheriff Lewless was sent to the scene to investigate.
