Fatal Accident on the P. O. & N.

One of the fatal accidents which occur here occasionally was that at the P. O. & N. depot at 7:20, Saturday morning, which resulted in the death of Jether Marks. Marks was an extra brakeman, and had been employed by the company about three weeks. ON Saturday morning he came in on the early train from Oxford, and as soon as it was unloaded he assisted in placing the coaches on the siding. He had just given the the signal to the engineer to back up, but immediately afterwards stepped between the two coaches to uncouple the sir break connection. Wesley Masters, a brakeman who was working with Marks, called to him to get out of the ay, but failed to do so, and was caught between the coaches in such a manner that he was pinched between the shoulders and stunned. He fell to the ground, and one coach ran over both his legs. He was picked up unconscious and carried into the depot where where he died from internal injuries a few moments afterwards. Marks but 22 years of age, and his home was at Cass City, where the remains were taken Saturday morning. the funeral was held from the home at Cass City, Monday afternoon. Deceased was unmarried. Coroner Brace was summoned and impaneled a jury, who decided that Mark's death was accidental. Mark's death is looked upon purely as the result of carelessness. He had given the signal to the engineer to back up instead of waiting until the coaches should be placed, he attempted to uncouple the sir pipe before they started, with the above result.
