Shipwrecked Sailor Who Entered School House
James Stevens, the sailor found by Farmington farmers in the district school house in that township last week and held until Sheriff Greer could bring him back to Pontiac, was arraigned in Justice North's court yesterday on a charge of destroying property to the value of $5. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 30 days in jail.
Stevens told the officer he is a sailor and was on board the wrecked Reuben Dowd recently destroyed on the Great Lakes. Stevens is a veteran of the civil war, having lost a thumb during his service in the army. He keeps the hand wrapped in cotton to protect it from the cold.
