Poor Lone Tramp
James Stevens, 63 Years Old, Brought to Pontiac By Sheriff—Had Fingers Shot Off. Sheriff George Greer was called to Farmington this morning to take possession of a tramp whom farmers, residing in the vicinity of the Green school house, had rounded up in the school house. The sheriff found the prisoner in charge of Will Green. The farmers claim the tramp, who gave the name of James Stevens, had broken into the school house during the night, built a fire in the stove and made himself comfortable. The school house stands on the boundary lines of Farmington, West Bloomfield and Novi townships.
On the way back to Pontiac Stevens told the sheriff he had been invited into the school house by two other men who had broken in before him and left early in the morning. As it snowed during the night and there were no tracks leading away from the school house the officers do not credit Stevens' story.
The tramp claims to be 63 years old and a former sailor. He is a typical hobo, dressed in ragged clothes, and with one hand done up in a sling. Stevens said the fingers on the hand had been shot off some time ago but the hand had been smashed recently. He claimed he was making his way back to Saginaw.
The director of the school district, George Hilliker, will come to Pontiac Monday to make a complaint against Stevens.
