Explosion of Gas
Caused Bad Burns For Engineer Fred Hakes
Fred Hake, of West Huron street, was badly burned about the hand and arm Friday afternoon, as a result of exploding gas. About 5 o'clock, Hake was cleaning out the boiler at the Pontiac steam laundry. He was putting in boiler compound and it was so dark that it was necessary to use a torch. The torch ignited the fumes from the compound, resulting in an explosion. The flame blew out in a large blast and burned through his shirt, blistering his hand and arm badly. His hair was slightly singed and the face slightly touched up.
